Municipal Guard Makes Four Arrests with the Support of Video Surveillance Cameras

The Municipal Guard of Canoas carried out four arrests with the support of technology. Based on calls from residents and images captured by video surveillance cameras—monitored by operators at the Integrated Command and Control Center (CICC)—teams responded to incidents and escorted the suspects to the Immediate Police Assistance Unit of Canoas (DPPA).

One of the arrests occurred after a pursuit by the Military Brigade involving a stolen vehicle. After the vehicle was stopped, the suspect fled on foot through the city center. Using images from the surveillance cameras, the Municipal Guard identified that the suspect escaped along Quinze de Janeiro Street and hid among bushes in Emancipação Square. A Municipal Guard patrol supported the Military Brigade and arrested the individual, who was then taken to the DPPA.

As shown in the video footage, the suspect attempts to hide—something that would be nearly impossible to detect without the assistance of surveillance cameras. Camera switching is fast and happens in real time, enabling quick response.

In another case, the Guard received calls reporting robberies at two pharmacies in the city center. In both incidents, those involved were apprehended and confessed. Three individuals were taken to the police station.

In a separate incident, intervention also resulted from camera monitoring. Initially, images showed a man breaking into a commercial establishment on Mathias Velho Street. At the time of the approach, the suspect did not have stolen items, was identified, and released. Shortly afterward, the suspect returned to steal electrical cables. Thanks to the surveillance cameras, it was possible to locate the individual again, this time carrying a box filled with electrical wiring. The Municipal Guard made the arrest.

In another occurrence, a camera identified a stolen vehicle. The Municipal Guard confirmed that the car had been abandoned and left unlocked, and proceeded with its recovery.
